A stag (also known as a hart) emerges from the dawn mist in an enchanted woodland. This is a painting that slowly evolved. I started with a black and white forest landscape, done over a couple sessions, then covered with a thin copper wash. After that, I used misty greens and purples, with a glow coming from the distance. A spirit animal, in the form of a deer, seemed right for the piece. Finally, I used a little metallic gold to highlight the foliage for this unusual tonalism landscape, inspired by the Oregon woods of the mystical Pacific Northwest.
I have been painting most of my life. Much of my inspiration comes from the beautiful natural landscape of the wst coast...the woods, the ocean, the rolling hills, the native wildflowers and wildlife. Even the surreal tree branches in the Zen series are often taken from the gnarled old oak trees I see on my walks. Other inspirations include teapots (I love tea) and animals, especially cats.
