In the moon window of a teahouse, a black and white cat sleeps contentedly as the sun rises. Steam is rising from the blue tetsubin (Japanese cast iron teapot). If you look closely, you can just make out koi swimming on the teapot. Two yunomi (teacups) in sand and sea colors have been laid out, which match the tea caddy on the window sill. Behind the stone path is the garden where a blossoming magnolia tree greets the new day. A branch has been brought in and rests in a burgundy ikebana bowl to complete the tea.
I have been painting most of my life. Much of my inspiration comes from the beautiful natural landscape of the wst coast...the woods, the ocean, the rolling hills, the native wildflowers and wildlife. Even the surreal tree branches in the Zen series are often taken from the gnarled old oak trees I see on my walks. Other inspirations include teapots (I love tea) and animals, especially cats.
